SUPER SPELLERS are made....not born :). Spelling takes daily practice and improves our kids' confidence, writing skills and general academic performance. Each Monday your child will bring home a list of spelling words in his or her own handwriting. Monday homework will be to write a sentence for each word--a sentence that demonstrates understanding of the word's definition. Each night at home your child should practice spelling the words, and on Friday are our spelling tests! Please note that the word lists will be words that are useful and used in everyday speech and writing. It's not useful to have kids memorize big long words that they will never use in their own writing, while being unable to spell the normal words that describe everyday action and thought. While it may seem like a neat trick to be able to spell "prestidigitation" or "mercurochrome" (rhymes with Froum! One of my favorites! :) it's much more important that the words our kids practice are words they will use in their writing.
